A buyer's guide to wire tensile strength, diameter and tolerances — explained simply

When you're sourcing spring or industrial wire, three specifications come up in almost every enquiry: tensile strength, diameter, and tolerance. They sound technical, but the ideas behind them are straightforward — and getting them right on your order is the difference between a component that performs and one that doesn't. Here's a plain-language guide for buyers.

Tensile strength: how much the wire can take

Tensile strength is the maximum stress a wire can withstand before it breaks, usually expressed in megapascals (MPa) or newtons per square millimetre (N/mm²). The higher the number, the more force the wire can carry before failing.

One point often surprises first-time buyers: for cold-drawn wires such as music wire and patented spring steel wire, tensile strength increases as diameter decreases. Drawing the wire down through progressively smaller dies work-hardens it, so a fine 0.50 mm wire will typically carry a higher tensile figure than a 3.00 mm wire of the same grade.

Because of this, you rarely need to quote a raw tensile number yourself. Instead, specify the grade or class, and the tensile range follows automatically from the applicable standard for that diameter. For example, patented cold-drawn spring wire is graded into strength classes (such as SL, SM, SH, DM, DH under EN 10270-1), and music wire tensile ranges are tabulated by diameter under standards like ASTM A228. Saying “high tensile” alone leaves too much open — naming the grade removes the guesswork.

Diameter: the nominal size you order to

Diameter is quoted as a nominal size in millimetres (older orders sometimes still reference SWG gauge numbers). It's worth remembering that no wire is exactly its nominal diameter — real wire always sits within a small band around the target. That band is defined by the tolerance.

Tolerances: how much variation is allowed

Tolerance is the permitted deviation from the nominal diameter, written as a ± figure. Standards define tolerance classes, and tighter tolerances generally cost more because they demand more from the drawing and inspection process.

Tolerance matters more than many buyers assume — especially for springs. A helical spring's stiffness depends on the wire diameter raised to the fourth power. So even a small deviation in diameter produces a much larger swing in spring force. If your springs are being wound on automated equipment, tolerance also affects feeding consistency and rejection rates. For a precision application, the tolerance class is not a detail to leave blank.

How to specify a wire order cleanly

To avoid back-and-forth, a good enquiry includes:

  • Grade / standard (e.g. the relevant EN, ASTM, or IS designation)
  • Nominal diameter in mm
  • Tolerance class or ± value
  • Tensile range (or simply the grade, which implies it)
  • Finish (e.g. black, phosphated, galvanized) and packaging form (coil or spool)
